The United Nations Special Session on Children was held in New York City on 8-10 May 2002.
More than 7,000 people participated in the most important international conference on children in more than a decade, the Special Session of the UN General Assembly on Children, at which the nations of the world committed themselves to a series of goals to improve the situation of children and young people.

Participating countries were asked to prepare a national review. Australia's National Review was submitted to UNICEF in March 2001.

Human Rights Commissioner Sev Ozdowski, participated in the Special Session. He consulted with children's and youth non-government organisations and Children's Commissioners in advance of the Special Session. Consultations were held in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Hobart, Adelaide, Canberra and Broome.
