Accolade for Aboriginal Corporations Chief

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner, Tom Calma, today congratulated Laura Beacroft on the sterling job she has done as Registrar of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporations.

In noting that Ms Beacroft’s term had had come to an end, Commissioner Calma said he appreciated the dedication and commitment she has brought to Indigenous organisation governance since 2002 when she was appointed to the position.

“Ms Beacroft’s commitment, capacity development and inclusive approach to both the regulation of the 2,500 Aboriginal corporations registered with the Office of the Registrar of Aboriginal Corporations, as well as the support she’s given them in meeting their regulatory obligations has been outstanding,” Mr Calma said.

“Laura’s determination to work with corporations to build their governance capacity and assist them with their transition to the new corporations legislation, that came into force on 1 July 2007, has been invaluable and will be sorely missed.”

Laura completed her term as the Registrar of Aboriginal Corporations today (28 September 2007).

“She will be replaced by Anthony Bevan, who we hope will continue the leadership, compassion and dedication shown by Laura to ensure the success and relevance of Indigenous Corporations,” Mr Calma said.
