Human Rights Medal and Awards 2000
Olympics satire The Games commended for its Reconciliation episode
The clever and highly successful satire of the lead-up to the Sydney 2000 Olympics has been commended by Human Rights Awards judges for its coverage of the issues of land rights, Indigenous health, reconciliation and the Stolen Generations.
In the Reconciliation episode, Series 2, Episode 3, serious concern is expressed by international political heavyweights about Australia's image in relation to its treatment of Indigenous Australians.
The highlight is a televised apology by actor John Howard who was employed by the fictional Games management team to deliver a profound and moving apology to Indigenous Australians on behalf of the nation for its past errors and neglect.
The judges commended The Games, written by John Clarke and Ross Stevenson, for the use of humour and satire in dealing with one of the most complex political and human rights issues in the country.
