Globathon Walk
to focus attention
on exploitation of children
Time: 1.30
pm
Date: Sunday, 22 July 2001
Location: Sydney Opera House forecourt
This Sunday, 22 July, Human Rights Commissioner Dr Sev Ozdowski will officially
launch the Globathon Walk, which aims to raise community awareness about
the exploitation and suffering of children around the world.
The walk will commence at the forecourt of the Sydney Opera House and cover four continents and 20,000 kilometres before finishing at the steps of the Acropolis, one week before the start of the 2004 Athens Olympics.
The first stage of the Walk will stretch between Sydney and Darwin.
"The abuse and exploitation of children is a gross violation of human rights. Because of their vulnerability, we need to be vigilant to ensure their rights are properly protected. I encourage the community to support this great Australian initiative, learn more about these issues and find practical ways that they can make a difference in the lives of suffering children," said Dr Ozdowski.
