Test Case has crucial social implications

Sex Discrimination Commissioner, Pru Goward, said the ACTU Work and Family Test Case lodged with the Australian Industrial Relations Commission today raises very important issues for parents in paid work and their families.

“This issue represents a huge industrial challenge for Australia with crucial social implications,” said Commissioner Goward.

“We need to better enable men and women to improve their combined work and family responsibilities so they are not struggling to balance these dual pressures.

“If we fail to provide this support, we not only produce dysfunctional families, but a dysfunctional society as well,” the Commissioner said.

Ms Goward said “The right for women to combine paid work and children is an important one and we need to ensure that right is respected and supported.”
