Children in Immigration Detention Inquiry – Public Hearing

A public hearing for the National Inquiry into Children in Immigration Detention will be held tomorrow, starting at 10am.

The purpose of the hearing is to permit Australasian Correctional Management (ACM) an opportunity to present oral submissions to the Inquiry Commissioner Dr Sev Ozdowski. ACM will be addressing certain aspects of the draft report of the National Inquiry into Children in Immigration Detention.

The draft report, which comprises 18 chapters and approximately 700 pages, was provided to ACM in May this year so that they could respond to the Inquiry’s preliminary findings and recommendations. ACM provided the Inquiry with its written responses by 5 September 2003. ACM also requested an opportunity to respond to details contained in the draft report in a public hearing. The Inquiry granted ACM’s request pursuant to the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission Act.

Dr Ozdowski will explain in more detail the circumstances leading to this public hearing in his opening statements. He will also set out the likely progress of the report after this hearing is completed.

Copies of the Human Rights Commissioner’s opening remarks will be available at the hearing or on request after 11am.
