ID cards welcome for people with disabilities

The availability of a new photo identification card through the NSW Roads and Traffic Authority will greatly assist many NSW residents with disabilities according to Acting Disability Discrimination Commissioner, Dr Sev Ozdowski.

"People with disabilities have raised this issue with me on a number of occasions, and I am pleased that the NSW Government has announced this initiative," said Dr Ozdowski.

A higher percentage of people with disabilities do not drive cars, and not having a drivers licence is a continuous problem.

"When you think of the number of times these days that you are asked to show your licence, not having one can be a real issue," the Commissioner said.

Driver's licences, which include photo ID, are required for a myriad of tasks in everyday life such as opening a bank account, posting a parcel, or even hiring a video.

"This will remove a barrier which society has unwittingly placed in the way of many people with disabilities," Dr Ozdowski said.

"I encourage other State Governments which do not already have proof of identity for people of any age who do not drive to follow the NSW example."
