Respect comes in all colours, shapes and sizes
The winners of the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission’s Shot! photographic competition for young people has been announced at the Human Rights Day Medals and Awards ceremony in Sydney today.
The winners were Amanda Lim (NSW) for a series of images on friendship, equality and respect and the Western Young People’s Independent Network Youth Committee (Victoria) for three images illustrating the right to freedom, the right to no racism and the right to no detention.
‘Women – adorable, intelligent species’ was the theme of Alyce Fraser’s (ACT) winning entry, while Luke Hann (SA) chose two six-year-olds, one black, one white, playing together in a school playground to demonstrate his theme of respect.
Each of the winners received a digital camera for their efforts.
The competition attracted well over 100 images from young people right across Australia that captured what 'respect' looks like in their schools, communities and close relationships.
The competition encouraged young people to think about issues of human rights and respect in their own daily lives and was open to all Australian young people aged 12-18 years.
A selection of photographs was showcased at the Human Rights Day ceremony, however, if you wander through our online gallery at www.humanrights.gov.au/shot you can check out a selection of the images that were entered - there's plenty to inspire you.
