Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission 2006-07 Annual Report tabled
The Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission’s (HREOC) 2006-07 Annual Report was tabled in Federal Parliament today and is now available on the website at www.humanrights.gov.au/about/publications/annual_reports/2006_2007
The report outlines the diverse range of activities undertaken by the Commission in pursuit of its statutory responsibilities and its vision of an Australian society in which the human rights of all are respected, protected and promoted.
One of HREOC’s roles is the investigation and conciliation of complaints of alleged discrimination in the areas of sex, race, age and disability, as well as breaches under the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission Act. In summary, during 2006-07 HREOC received:
- 16,606 enquiries, an increase on previous years of over 65%
- 1,779 complaints, an increase on previous years of over 42%
- 94% of matters were finalised within 12 months, a slight improvement on the previous year
- 38% were finalised by conciliation – consistent with previous three years.
The Complaint Handling Section (found at Chapter four) includes a summary overview and complete complaint handling statistics.
The annual report also details:
- a range of major projects, reports and inquiries
- HREOC’s contribution to policy development and legislative review
- human rights promotional and education activities
- our regional and international activities.
