Commissioner Congratulates Government on New Health Check
Disability Discrimination Commissioner Graeme Innes AM has today congratulated the Australian Government on changes to Medicare rebates which allow longer health checks for people with intellectual disabilities.
"People with intellectual disabilities may not always be as conscious as others of particular health conditions impacting on their quality of life," Commissioner Innes said.
"This extra rebate for General Practitioners will ensure they take the extra time needed in consultations with people with intellectual disabilities to ensure that conditions, especially the more complex ones, are checked.
"In the rush and bustle of busy general practice, this extra rebate will ensure the extra care required," Commissioner Innes said.
This decision has occurred following lengthy negotiations between the Government, the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and the disability sector.
It will apply from July this year.
