Shortlist announced for human rights photography competition

A top shelf shortlist of entries in the Australian Human Rights Commission’s 2008 Photography Competition is now online.

Thirty photos judged the best of more than 380 entered into the competition, covered a mix of colour and black and white photos embracing the competition’s theme – the same as this year’s official UN Human Rights Day theme - ‘Dignity and justice for all of us,’ in unique approaches to human rights subjects.

Commission President Catherine Branson QC said the competition reached far and wide in its  search for images that reflected the theme in three categories of Under 18 (male), Under 18 (female) and 18 and above (age at 30 June 2008).

“The selected shortlist not only reveals a new and thought-provoking consideration of human rights issues but is also testament to the enormous talent out there,” Ms Branson said.

Winners of the competition will be announced at the Australian Human Rights Commission’s 2008 Awards Ceremony being held on Wednesday, 10 December 2008 at the Sheraton on the Park Hotel in Sydney.

Category winners will receive a $500 voucher at Digital Camera Warehouse and runners up will receive a one-year subscription to Australian Photography Magazine.

Winners, runners up and shortlisted entries in each category will also be exhibited at the Awards ceremony.

Shortlisted entries can be viewed online at www.humanrights.gov.au/photo_comp/shortlist.html

The 2008 Human Rights Photography Competition is sponsored by Digital Camera Warehouse, Australian Photography Magazine, Vision Graphics and Actnow.com.au.
