Women urged to put hand up for Australia 2020 summit

Women of all ages and backgrounds should step up and nominate for representation at the Prime Minister’s Australia 2020 summit being held in April, Federal Sex Discrimination Commissioner Elizabeth Broderick said today.

“I am concerned, like a large proportion of Australians, that the 11-person steering committee announced yesterday had only one woman member,” Commissioner Broderick said.

“Neglecting women at this pivotal part of the summit planning could very easily lead to women’s experiences not being represented at this important opportunity to shape Australia’s future.

“As selection of the discussion groups will be drawn from the nomination process, I urge the thousands of Australia’s best and brightest women to put their names forward.

“I have contacted the Prime Minister’s Office to pass on the many concerns expressed to me about the lack of women’s representation. I understand now that of the 10 discussion groups, seven will have at least one female co-chair,” she said.

Women interested in nominating for the Australia 2020 summit should nominate by close of business this Friday, 29 February, by going to www.australia2020.gov.au
