Multiculturalism report: policy for a successful future

Race Discrimination Commissioner, Graeme Innes, today strongly endorsed statements made by Parliamentary Secretary for Multicultural Affairs and Settlement Services, the Hon Laurie Ferguson MP, about the new report, Perceptions of Multiculturalism and Security in Victoria.

Mr Innes said that multiculturalism was vital to Australia’s social and economic progress.

“As a policy that has a particular focus on access, equity, justice, respect and cross-cultural understanding, multiculturalism is a policy that is vital for present and future community harmony in Australia,” said Commissioner Innes. “It is also a policy that is important for Australia’s international reputation, economic development and security.”

Commissioner Innes said the Perceptions report reflects much international thinking about community harmony and security. This thinking emphasises that implementation of a successful range of programs that cross cultural and religious backgrounds and involve media, education and youth is central to achieveing harmony and peace within our community.

“Fostering a sense of belonging in, and commitment to Australia, is fundamental to any program that aims to protect public safety,” said Commissioner Innes. “Multiculturalism is therefore a policy that should be strongly linked to the government's social inclusion agenda as well as to its counter-terrorism initiatives.”

Commissioner Innes said he was pleased that the Australian Government would be using the report in the development of new cultural diversity policies.

"The Australian Human Rights Commission is looking forward to working with the government on its new multicultural policy and programs which, I anticipate, will be adequately funded in the next budget,” said Commissioner Innes.

Commissioner Innes said the Australian Human Rights Commission was pleased that these policies were in development and looked forward to a renewal of bi-partisan support and a whole-of-parliament recognition of the importance of multiculturalism.
