Human Rights Awards 2011

Congratulations to the winners!

More than 450 people came together on 9 December this year at the Australian Human Rights Commission's annual Human Rights Awards to celebrate the amazing contributions people have been making all around the country to protect and promote human rights.

This year was our 24th celebration and we once again had a stand-out field of nominations.

Nominees for the Awards competed in 10 categories included the Human Rights Medal and the Young People's Medal. The remaining categories included Law, Business, Community (Individual), Community (Organisation), Literature (Non-Fiction), Print and Online Media, Television and Radio Awards.

The winners were presented with their awards at a luncheon ceremony taking place on Friday 9 December at the Sydney Sofitel Wentworth, hosted by comedian Corinne Grant.

The Australian Human Rights Medal encourages people that they are on the right track, that their efforts are worthwhile, that what they are doing matters to others, that they are in fact making a real difference. At least, that's what it did for me. The Australian Human Rights Medal says that, in our country, human rights matter, that they are precious, that they need to be nurtured and expanded and put into effect.

Receiving the Medal in 2010 was also for me an acknowledgement of the leadership and example that my Mum and Dad provided as they worked together over a lifetime to tackle beliefs and attitudes, behaviour, rules and physical design which created unnecessary burdens because Dad was in a wheelchair.

Winner of the 2010 Human Rights Medal
