‘Human Rights Resources’ for Young People
To help build an everyday understanding of human rights and responsibilities among school aged children, HREOC is developing a language other than English (LOTE) learning resource in partnership with Community Languages Australia (CLA).
The resource will be translated in to a number of languages to reach Muslim communities and used to learn these languages in community language schools and after-hours ethnic schools.
These non-profit schools provide classes outside of regular school hours to school aged children. In 2006 approximately 100,000 young people around the country took part in classes.
Like the resource for new arrivals, this project aims to help young people develop greater awareness of what human rights mean in their everyday life, as well as how to deal with experiences of harassment or discrimination.
The project began in March 2008. The initial stage will be to develop and pilot the resource. A Muslim Reference Group and Project Advisory Group will identify the first language for translation of the resource, with the aim of having the greatest reach with Muslim communities.
The resource will include ‘take-home’ activities for students, to help students provide information to their families about human rights issues in their own lives.
This will be followed by a high profile event with participating schools, which will allow students to share what they have learnt with their community. If the project is successful the Muslim Reference Group will identify several more languages for translation of the resource.
The final stage of the project will involve a media campaign that draws on ideas and materials developed by the students and which promotes the importance of human rights and tackling discrimination.
