Police helping to reduce hatred in the community

Treat all reports of racial and religious hatred seriously and fairly; listen carefully to the victim.
Allay their fears.

Record all reported incidents and offences on COPS using the associated factors screen to show prejudice as a motivation. Investigate all hate crimes.

Understand the impact of hate incidents on the victim, their family and on the community. Use an interpreter if you need to and arrange victim support through relevant Liaison Officers in your Crime Management Unit.

Supply the victim with the contact details of the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission and the Anti-Discrimination Board and encourage them to lodge a complaint, if relevant.

Train everyone in your Command to take hate incidents seriously and remember to record, investigate and refer.

Who to refer a victim to?

In addition to investigating criminalmatters, please refer anyone who has experienced or witnessed discrimination
