From: Harris, Stacey Sent: Monday, 7 December 2009 5:01 PM To: disabdis Subject: Re Captioning changes [SEC=UNCLASSIFIED] I would like to voice my opposition to the application from the Cinema industry, to be exempt from the Disability Discrimination Act in relation to captioning for the next two and a half years. In an era when the focus is on ‘mainstreaming’ and ‘involving’ all people of the community, it is an extremely primitive step to take to isolate a (large and) specific group of people. I live in a regional centre and as it is, my Deaf friends and I have to travel to Melbourne to see captioned films, if this application is accepted, this will further reduce, if not eliminate, our opportunity to attend the cinema. Given one in 6 people in Australia have a hearing problem, this is a huge exclusion to social interaction for a large portion of our society. Please don’t accept this application Sincerely Stacey Harris Audiologist Australian Hearing Albury
