Sexual assault at Universities

Students protesting sexual violence

The Australian Human Rights Commission's national report on sexual assault and sexual harassment at Australian universities will be released on Tuesday 1 August 2017.

Sex Discrimination Commissioner Kate Jenkins highlighted the invaluable contribution that students and advocates have made to the project.

“I would like to acknowledge the courage shown by all those who have come forward to share their personal experiences with the Commission,” she said.

The report is being released at a time when most students are on campus to ensure that those who need support can access services through their universities.”

The Commission has welcomed federal government funding for community legal centres.

“Community legal centres are vital in protecting the basic human rights of disadvantaged people in Australia.

“I am very pleased that Attorney-General George Brandis has announced that the Federal Government will continue to support the community legal assistance sector.

“By reversing proposed cuts to community legal centre funding, the Federal Government is making an important, practical commitment to human rights,” Human Rights Commissioner Edward Santow said.

President Gillian Triggs has launched a joint Australian Human Rights Commission report with global professional services firm EY.

The report details the strong business case for the financial services industry to consider human rights in their investment decisions.

Speaking at the launch, Professor Triggs said that the report comes at a time when attitudes in the business community are changing.

“Over recent years the principle that companies have a responsibility to respect human rights has gained unprecedented acceptance,” said Professor Triggs.
