Ethical AI in South Australia

Human rights
Submission by the Commission

Artificial intelligence (AI) has the ability to improve and enrich the lives of not just South Australians, but all people who call Australia home. South Australia must ensure that it is prepared to adopt and integrate AI readily.

However, if AI is adopted without the necessary safeguards - the human rights of all people may be challenged.

Finding balance

Striking the correct balance between the adoption of AI and the mitigation of human rights harms is not an easy task. It requires forethought and commitment to protecting human rights in the digital age.

To assist the South Australian Government's Select Committee on AI, the Commission's Technology and Human Rights portfolio has provided its recent submission on the need for human rights-centred AI alongside a cover letter.

Our submission

The adoption of ethical AI, which protects and promotes human rights, can only be achieved if States, Territories and the Commonwealth work in unison.

The Commission welcomes the South Australian inquiry, and encourages discourse between all levels of government on the issues presented by the use of AI.
