The Chinese presence in Australia

Two hundred years ago, almost to the day, on 27 February 1818, Mak Sai Ying arrived in Port Jackson, on the ship Laurel. Mak was the first known Chinese immigrant to arrive in the colony of New South Wales. Mak Sai Ying purchased land here in Parramatta and became a carpenter, He worked for John Blaxland, one of the colony’s prominent landowners and merchants. In 1829, he was granted the licence to run The Golden Lion Hotel on Church Street (a few hundred metres around the corner from where we are here at Western Sydney University).

Fighting racism in Australia

It is timely to have this forum on racial discrimination, given the global resurgence of intolerance, xenophobia and racism. It is absolutely essential that people, societies, and states around the world show resolve in countering racism, in naming it whenever it appears, and in fighting it with every means possible. This is for very simple reasons: racism runs contrary to our universal values of equality and non-discrimination, and racism diminishes not only those who are on the receiving end of prejudice and discrimination. It diminishes all of us, whether it is communities, societies, or the global community.

Racism, denial and false narratives

I acknowledge the Darug people as the traditional owners of the land on which we meet. May I also acknowledge Dr Sev Ozdowski and his leadership in convening this important gathering. Through hosting this conference, Western Sydney University demonstrates how crucial a voice it is in our national conversation about social cohesion and multiculturalism. These are challenging times for multiculturalism. Then again, for friends of multiculturalism, it can always feel that way. That is because our multiculturalism remains a work in progress; the goal of an inclusive society involves an ongoing project. And the dimensions of this project evolve over time. Our society never stands still. It grows, it moves, it changes.
