in Rural and Regional Australia:
A new manual to combat Homophobia
Human Rights Commissioner Chris Sidoti will today launch Not Round Here - a training manual to help promote the rights of gay men, lesbians, bisexuals and persons of transgender identity, especially those living in rural Australia.
Not Round Here, co-authored by Kenton Penley Miller and Mahamati, is a new resource for providing anti-homophobia training to teachers, service providers and others.
Commissioner Sidoti said:
"Research studies confirm that those who do not identify as heterosexual often face serious discrimination and prejudice in the provision of services. All people have the right to receive services in a supportive and accepting environment, regardless of their sexuality or other status."
"Not Round Here is probably the most comprehensive package of its kind. It will help teachers and service providers protect the rights of their gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender students and clients. Unlike many existing kits, it specifically addresses homophobia in the rural context."
Not Round Here is the first major initiative developed by Outlink, the national network of rural lesbian, gay and bisexual young people. Studies show that these people face higher than average levels of suicide, drug and alcohol abuse, and homelessness, conflict with peers and parents and early school leaving. In remote and rural areas there are often little or no support services.
Outlink was established by the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission with co-sponsorship from the Australian Youth Foundation. The manual was produced with the assistance of the ALSO Foundation and Mr Rodney Ellis.
