Summary

Centring First Nations truth-telling, sovereignty and self-determination is foundational to racial justice.

A series of four animated stories has been created by GARUWA, in collaboration with the Race Discrimination Team at the Australian Human Rights Commission.

GARUWA is a First Nations owned and led production company.

Titled Still Becoming: Our Anti-Racist Future, the stories centre lived experience, truth‑telling and First Peoples’ leadership in anti‑racism. They share the voices and perspectives of First Peoples.

Each story highlights how racism is shaped by the ongoing impacts of colonisation and how it’s experienced in everyday life. The stories invite audiences to listen deeply, reflect critically and better understand why First Nations justice is racial justice.

These are true stories of racism.

We're grateful to each storyteller for the courage it took to share them, and the space that their stories open for collective healing.

Four stories from First Peoples

Learn. Act. End Racism.

Centring First Nations sovereignty, self-determination and truth‑telling is foundational to meaningful and lasting change.

In Australia, the racism experienced by First Peoples is unique. It is built on the ongoing denial of sovereignty and self-determination.

These stories support collective learning and action against racism. They are a call to action for leaders, educators and workplaces. It is an opportunity to move beyond awareness and towards structural change.

Schools, workplaces and communities can be places where everyone can thrive, no matter who they are or where they’re from.

To support student learning and understanding of the issues faced by First Peoples, a unit of work has been designed for Years 5 and 6. This unit is aligned to the outcomes of the Australian Curriculum
