From: OWEN GEOFFREY COOPER [ogc@deakin.edu.au] Sent: Friday, 29 June, 2001 14:54 To: disabdis@humanrights.gov.au Subject: Taxi submission I am a wct user studying at Deakin Uni Geelong. I do not have a great deal of trouble due to the fact that there are several WT in Geelong. However, my mine problem lies in catching a taxi in Melb. There have been many occasions where I have been late &/or missed appoints altogether. A recent example was when I was required to go to Melb once a week for uni. Given the fact that it is so hard to book a taxi, I was forced to get a wc from Geelong to drive me to Melb, wait around for a hour & drive me back. This also meant that Geelong was without a wc. I also had the experience of booking a wc to pick me up from Spencer St. I had booked a week prior to my arrival. This situation is simply not appropriate. Finally, it should be mandatory that all cabs be fitted with 2 meters. 1 for the driver & 1 in the back two enable passages to see how much the fare is. This would also prevent drivers from attempting to miss charge passengers. I do hope the above information is helpful. Owen Cooper.
