This morning I am going to talk to you about unaccompanied child migrants in the wider context of current world trends. In so doing, I have taken full account of the lessons to be learned from the experiences of the victims of British child migration schemes.

The Australian Human Rights Commission has long advocated for comprehensive protection for all human rights set out in international law. This includes effective legal protection for the human rights that are most directly relevant to the Committee’s current inquiry—freedom of religion and belief, and protection against discrimination on the grounds of: sex, relationship or marital status; pregnancy; sexual orientation and gender identity.

I would like to open today by reading you part of an e-mail that a work colleague of mine received recently from a young Australian woman in her early twenties, who recently completed her Bachelor of Communications degree from UTS in Sydney.
