Last year a blind colleague of mine decided he needed a pet dog to be company for him and his teenage daughter. After checking various pet rescue websites and talking to various people, he found an 18-month-old German Shepherd / red Cattle dog cross that this bloke was giving away. He even brought the dog over in his car.

Thanks for the chance to speak with you today. As you might guess, in my role as Disability Discrimination Commissioner, I receive many invitations to speak at functions on the international day. One of the reasons I chose this invitation is because of the really important role that Local Government plays in the lives of all Australians. It deals with the issues that are in your face- and I know, because until two years ago I was a Councillor on Ku-Ring-Gai Council.

Good morning everyone. I'm actually thinking of developing a theory of corporate management based on reactions to that introduction. For example, when I say good morning to first year university students, they echo "good morning" back to me; when I say good morning to politicians, they remain silent, lest they be misquoted; when I say good morning to management consultants, they write it down; and when I say good morning to web content strategists, they hurry off to turn it into a inaccessible bitmap image.

I also acknowledge the Larrakia people and pay my respects to their elders past, present and future. I honour them for their custodianship of the land on which we gather tonight. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have long spoken out for equality on both the national and international stage. And in terms of gender equality, they are leading the way with the National Congress of Australia’s First Peoples which has both a male and female co-chair and mandated gender equality at all levels.

Since the launch of my interim paper on this issue in April this year, there has been an overwhelming amount of public and political debate about the need or otherwise to introduce such a scheme in Australia.

It is nearly fifteen years since the introduction of the Sex Discrimination Act - legislation enacted in Australia to meet our international obligations under the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women. At the same time too, we have seen the introduction of legislation (The Affirmative Action Act) designed to commit organisations of 100 or more employees to determining measures and programs to ensure that women are afforded equal opportunity.

Diversity in Health is a conference about health. Multicultural Mental Health Australia is a multicultural health service. Vision Australia deals with issues and needs of people with print disability. What have these services and issues got to do with human rights, and why am I launching them? I'd like to reflect on these questions, and strongly argue that there is a fundamental connection between health and human rights.

It is my pleasure to report to you today on the outcome of deliberations of the Working Group on Human Rights Education. This working group was relatively small in size but very diverse and robust in its deliberations. It consisted of representatives of Arabic countries, including the host country Qatar as well as Japan, the Philippines and Australia.
