BackMeUp 2013 Winners

It’s been a few months since Ruby Rose told a hall full of students that cyberbullying is “way uncool” as she launched the Australian Human Rights Commission’s BackMeUp 2013 – a video competition aimed at helping teenagers overcome cyberbullying, which affects one in ten young Australians.

Over 8 competition weeks, we received 61 video entries from around the country! From animation to claymation, drama to melodrama, the entries are as diverse as they are engaging.

So, after careful consideration by our judging panel, which included last year’sBackMeUp winners Ari Kwasner-Catsi and Casey Finn (thanks guys, we couldn’t have done it without you!), the National Children’s Commissioner Megan Mitchell is pleased to announce the 5 outstanding videos that have taken out the top prizes for BackMeUp 2013.

The 5 winning videos will each receive a GoPro camera or if they preferred, a $500 JB HIFi voucher!

Commissioner Mitchell said choosing the best entries wasn’t easy.

“There were so many fabulous videos but in the end, we could only choose 5. And those videos were chosen for their production values and the way they demonstrated the BackMeUp message that safely helping out someone being cyberbullied can change lives,” said Commissioner Mitchell.

“Ari and Casey were vital in helping the Commission select videos that resonate with young people, which is a critical part of the judging process,” she said.

2012 Campaign

The campaign was launched in June 2012 to encourage young people to support their friends targeted by cyberbullying. Research on bullying has found that bullying incidents usually occur in front of bystanders and that the majority of people feel either powerless to act or actually encourage the bullying.

More than 100 films were entered in the BackMeUp competition which has had over 56,000 YouTube views.

BackMeUp has been supported by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), National institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA), Sydney Harbour YHA, UNICEF, Alannah and Madeline Foundation, Headspace, Inspire Foundation, Bullying. No Way!, Scouts Australia, Girl Guides Australia, Foundation for Young Australians, Lawstuff, Kids Helpline, Facebook Australia, Google, Telstra, Edith Cowan University’s Child Health Promotion Research Centre and Young and Well Cooperative Research Centre.
